Schoolchildren dread it and parents love it. What is it? It’s Back to School shopping!
It happens every year as the Summer winds down. Summer days of play and hanging out. Popsicles, swimming, and cookouts now make way for Back to School shopping. New clothes and shoes are needed for children who have outgrown last year’s. In addition, new school supplies are necessary for the next grade in school, as assigned by new teachers. So it’s time to wind down Summer fun and look toward to the first day of school!
There are only 3 schools located in Addison, Texas. They are George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School (Public), Greenhill School (Private), and Trinity Christian School (Private). Therefore, many families who will do their Back to School shopping in Addison live outside this area. In and around Addison, most retailers sell school supplies including:
Office Depot/Office Max
Staples
Target
COSTCO
Sam’s
Walgreen’s
CVS
Tom Thumb
Dollar Tree
Family Dollar
Amazon.com
Ebay.com
Many large retailers such as Wal-Mart also have lists of items requested by local schoolteachers.
Some states try to help ease the cost burden of school supplies for families. States like Texas provide a brief period of tax relief for back to school shoppers. The Texas Sales Tax Holiday this year falls on August 11 – 13, 2017. This Sales Tax Holiday exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 from sales and use taxes. As a result, shoppers could save about $8 on every $100 they spend. The Sales Tax Holiday also applies to items sold online, by telephone or by mail. Shoppers can use layaway plans to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. This measure is a welcome part of Back to School shopping!
It’s Time for Back to School Shopping Today!
Of course there are many children whose parents cannot provide new clothes, shoes and school supplies each year. To help these children, retailers like Kroger collect and distribute supplies. The Kroger on Belt Line Road at Marsh Road in Addison is celebrating more than Back to School sales. Last week they unveiled their new facade and began selling gas at its new gas pump facility. Also, they plan to drop a gas coupon soon.
The Salvation Army, Dallas Mayor’s Office, Kids In Need Foundation, and The Links, Inc. also give away school supplies free to deserving children. Such events are posted on Eventbrite.com and news media websites. Giveaways include backpacks, pencils, pens, paper and most every other classroom item a child might need to start the year out right.
Whether you are a student, parent, or teacher, it’s time for Back to School shopping and the new school year. Have a safe, productive first day of school!
